Some Cool Ideas for Christmas…

0
0

Whew! All our Christmas art print orders have been posted out to you, and now we’re able to really starting to think about Christmas at our place. These cute, clever and just-plain-cool Christmas ideas caught our eye, so we thought we’d share!

That Christmas Wreath Pavlova looks soooo good. See the recipe here. Our baking skills don’t stretch that far, but we’re keen to make some Gingerbread Letters (yes, we’re font nerds).

craft garlands

Take down the tinsel and craft yourself a cool garland instead.

For the Christmas morning coffee? A Peppermint Ice cream Affogato, with strong black coffee. And how cute (and easy) are these Strawberry Santas? They’re definitely happening in our house this year.

A kiwi take on the traditional stocking. Just make sure you use nice new Merino ones, not the ones from the top drawer! (PS: We know it’s the thought that counts, but please don’t fill our stockings with foliage, Santa.) And this is a clever little idea for displaying all those Xmas cards, dontcha think?

3 Autumn Interior Ideas

0

The weather’s getting cooler… so why shouldn’t your house!
Here’s 3 easy ideas to change things up for the staying-in season:

art print on wall with leather couch

Now’s a good time to get out that favourite blankie or throw (or treat yourself to one). Not only can you snuggle up underneath it while you watch MKR, but draping new graphic patterns and textures over your sofa is a super easy way to inject some new life into your space.

Bring the outside in. Go for an stroll in that Autumn air and on the way, pick a moody little bunch – flowers, branches, autumn leaves… they’ll look great in an old preserving jar or a vintage teapot.

prints on wall and fireplace

Candles turn a house into a warm, welcoming home. And they make you sort of glad it gets dark so early! (PS: Have a fireplace that doesn’t work? You should totally put candles in it.)

Botanic Beauties

Old botanical prints give a vintage flavour to any room, and help bring a bit of the outdoors in…

Botanic art print

We’re big fans of the humble preserving jar. And who says a flower arrangement has to be all flowers?

botanic art print in kitchen

Love the industrial-meets-vintage flavour of this kitchen, softened by the introduction of a few plant friends.

Art gallery wall

Pick a theme you love, and run with it. Some framed, some hanging on bulldog clips, some stuck to the wall with washi tape… gallery walls don’t need to be expensive.

art in kid's room

So lovely! Favourite ingredients: the botanical print on the wall, the sheepskin (they were a feature of our childhood – what about you?) and the teeny tiny bench seat.

chairs and large wall prints

Not exactly botanical (ew! bugs!), but you can’t go wrong with a big vintage print hanging right above a favourite vintage chair.

modern design lounge with art prints

Crushing on this clashtastic modern-meets-boho space. And there’s those sheepskins again!

Girls room with art print on wall

Simple sweetness with a vintage botanical print in this little girls room.

The Coast of Golden Finds

Hey everyone, Kate here! Recently my in-laws kindly organised a family holiday to the Gold Coast, Australia. Although I was excited about a week of sunshine, I admit I was somewhat weary of the shopping and fossicking opportunities. How wrong I was. I only just managed to get my suitcase closed!

If you find yourself also heading to the coast of sun & sand, here is a list of places to seek out….
(We were based at Burleigh Heads so this guide is focused around that area.)

Burleigh Heads State School holds a regular market - on the first and third Sunday of every month. This is a good place to stock up on fresh local food. There was one couple selling vintage curiosities and a few cool fashion choices including these beautiful handmade clutch bags from Reinka Inka.

Hidden below the edge of the highway just up from James Street is a small cluster of coolness. Commune cafe got the tick from the kids. And according to the blackboard they do ‘meat free’ mondays and ‘ping pong’ sundays!

It is impossible to avoid a run (or walk) along the stunning waterfront. The good news is that after you have exerted some energy you can treat yourself to a decent coffee and fresh toasted banana bread with vanilla butter (mmmmmm) at Borough Barista.

In Burleigh, the heart of shopping is James Street. Here you will find your usual tourist requirements and more than a few interesting spots…

The Coin Laundry describe themselves as a fierce little fashion boutique.

Sean Scott Gallery stock a cool selection of Surf DVDs and vintage pottery.

If you like ELKE jewellery pop in to Carmels Designs and Homewares.

If you have kids, don’t go into DragonFly (you WILL buy something!).

At Le Deux Boutique I found myself a scarf so yummy I’m now enjoying winter.

Urban Groove is eclectic and fun, a perfect place for gift shopping.

Don’t miss the arcade with Village Homewares on the corner. Hiding down the lane is very sweet boutique, One Hundred Words (how cool is the flower wall) and Canteen Kitchen (more great coffee and banana bread).

And my all time favourite was Monsoon. A collection of oriental inspired homewards curated the bubbly Robyn Spratt.  Thankfully Robyn sells through Instagram. I will be going back for more.

Ooh, it’s been ages since we’ve done one of these!
Inspired by our new Parson Circle Art Print, we’ve put together a Mid-Century-loving space…

Tui Art Print Styled

From top left:

Parson Circle Art Print by Margaret Petchell, choose from framed or unframed at endemicworld.
Catherine David vintage-style pendant light, in a great shade called ‘Gull’.
The iconic Karlsson Flip Clock from LET LIV.
We think the green in this Plus Cushion (Cotton & Flax) picks up the greens in the Tui’s feathered chest.
This genuine Peter Hvidt Minerva Sofa might be from the 1950′s, but it would look amazing in our lounge room in 2013! From Mr Bigglesworthy.
The Geo Rug from LET LIV is a contemporary choice, but the colour and geo pattern make it a nice match for mid-century pieces.
Gorgeous retro-styled Metro Vase, handcrafted in New Zealand by Studio Ceramics, and available online at Iko Iko.
This super cool coffee table is a replica of the famous mid-century Eames CTW Table. Available in NZ through Nood.

Sugar and spice and all things nice, that’s what little girls are made of…
Inspired by new endemicworld artist Olivia Bezett’s darling animal artworks, we’ve imagined a sugar sweet bedroom for a little girl.

At bedtime:

We’re a little bit (ok, a lot) addicted to online window shopping… Imagining all the awesome interior looks we could create with cool new art prints on the wall and matching homeware and accessories. Which is your favourite?

Is it your Mr. Coffee Lover’s birthday coming up? We think the Hard Man Art Print and a stylish Keep Cup make a handsome team.

Owl Art Print and Vase

Teenage NZ artist Olivia Bezett creates dreamy pencil sketches of woodland creatures – her Owl Art Print would be a fairytale addition to any little or big girl’s bedroom, and you could match it with one of these ceramic Owls from Collected.

Meet the Artists: Chloe Sawyer

We’re so inspired by the work (and prolific work ethic!) of emerging ‘young gun’ and endemicworld artist Chloe Sawyer (aka Chloe Ruby.)  Chloe’s work is feminine, delicate and whimsical, inspired by her love of creatures great and small and Chloe’s sunny, uplifting outlook on life. We’re big fans!

Chloe Ruby

Chloe with one of her original illustrations – also available as an art print in various sizes (framed or unframed)

Chloe Ruby Art Prints

Chloe with some of the framed art prints available on endemicworld

You studied down at CPIT but you’re now in Auckland. What did you study, and what are you doing now?
I completed a Bachelor of Design in Applied Visual Arts last year in Christchurch and moved up to Auckland at the beginning of the year. I had planned to find a part-time job while I got my feet started as a practicing artist but I was overwhelmed with commissions that I never ended up getting a side job!

My work ranges from commercial illustration, personal commissions for people and any spare time is spent on my own artwork.

hug art print and tee

Chloe’s ‘Hug’ illustration is available on this Sophie Jo tee, and as a sweet art print (with matching ‘Kiss’ print too!)

Chloe-Ruby-endemicworld-Artist

Chloe-Ruby-painting

Where do you create?
I have a studio in my house where I work all day, but when I need to get out I’ll take my work to a local cafe and take advantage of a new setting around people (and countless long blacks haha).

Working from home is definitely a challenge. I have to been really self disciplined and motivated, but coming straight from uni has been great because i’ve brought all of my work habits with me.

Chloe Ruby Lino Cut

Chloe uses loads of techniques to get the look she wants for each piece – from pencil sketching to hand-carved lino cut stamps

What are you working on creatively at the moment?
I have just finished some big jobs for the clothing shop Pagani doing illustrations for their Spring campaign, and illustrating books for the Ministry of Education.

Chloe Ruby art for pagani

Chloe’s custom illustrations for NZ clothing brand Pagani – love!

Right now I am so excited to have time to prepare some new work! I am working on a range of affordable mini prints, my work so far has been quite expensive and it’s so important to me that my art is accessible to everyone.

So hopefully i’ll have work to suit every budget ready for Christmas…

Chloe Ruby mini art print

One of Chloe’s new mini prints – work in progress…

Which NZ artists/designer(s) do you most look up to and why?
A couple of years ago Hayley King (Flox) spoke in Christchurch and I was so encouraged to see a woman who has created a full time career as an artist and mother. Her motivation and drive is so inspiring and also the steady development of her work is awesome to watch. She is one of those courageous women who see no limits and just shine.

Tell us about a dream project you’d love to work on…
I love collaborating and I love doing things that I know are making a positive influence on the world. So I suppose I would love to do illustration for humanitarian organisations. It’s been so cool seeing my work on new surfaces so working for clothing brands who have a huge priority on fair trade is something that would excite me.

Chloe Ruby Good Day

Chloe-Ruby-iphone-wallpapers

Chloe creates a new piece of artwork every week (free download for your desktop and iPhone wallpapers) for NZ charities Live for Tomorrow and Little Lot

Fave music to create by?
Music is definitely so important in my work environment. But at the moment i’ve actually been enjoying listening to audio books haha. It’s a bit geeky but I love it, time flies by when I draw and listen to books.

Chloe posts loads of new work and goodies to her Facebook page – go check it out! www.facebook.com/ChloeSawyerArt

Things are changin’! Our furrier mate has gotten bigger, and our team has changed since our last staff pics, (Jenna Smith has been off adventuring with her camera, but is keeping us well stocked with some pretty awesome photographic prints from her travels), so it was time for some fresh pics, just like school photos in the good olds days, only different.

Check out some of the outtakes below – surprisingly out of all three subjects, Cash was the easiest to get to stand still…

Rakai Karaitiana opening night “Rest Area”

Each year the annual Auckland Photography Festival brings galleries together to celebrate fine art photography, and this year we decided to bring Hawkes Bay artist Rakai Karaitiana to show his new series of work “Rest Area”.

The Rest Area images are all hand-coloured photographs captured and coloured by the artist. Hand-colouring was a popular method for producing colour photography in the early to mid 19th century and made popular by the early Japanese colour artists and studios like Kusakabe Kimbei as well as Luis Márquez from Mexico and most famously here in NZ by Whites Aviation.

All of Rakai’s photographic art prints are now available online

Meet the artist: Hannah Jensen

0
0

On Friday the 6th of October endemicworld will be hosting ‘Wild – In The Making’ part one of Hannah Jensen’s latest solo exhibition.

A multidisciplinary artist most well-known for her carved work, Hannah graduated from Auckland University of Technology in 2004 with a Bachelor of Visual Arts majoring in printmaking, and transferred her skills to the painted medium in her postgraduate practice, developing a unique stylistic approach.

With seven large-scale animal pieces to create, she will stage an intimate studio setting where you are invited to watch the artworks come to life. Hannah will be carving daily demonstrating her mastered technique of cutting into layers of acrylic on board revealing the colours below.

Jensen draws inspiration from her hours spent walking around her father’s game reserve in South Africa: capturing the jaw-dropping experience of standing face to face with a wild animal. Her work celebrates the exceptional beauty of each individual animal, emphasizing their magnificent textures, from fur to feathers, tusks to antlers: all are intricately hand carved.

From African Game to French Wild Horses, Arctic Mammals and Japanese Cranes, these striking animal portraits are a harrowing reality check of what will be left behind if we continue to destroy their natural habitats. With a passion for nature and travel, Jensen only hopes she has the chance to see them all in her lifetime, in the wild.
